29th Ice and Snow Sailing World Championship results

Breaking records of previous years, introducing new discipline – slalom – for wing and sailboard classes, crowning double champion – Alexander Larsson and just having great riding time, 29th Ice and Snow Sailing World Championships (ISSWC 2009) is officially closed until next year in Canada.

The event is the longest running international competition in the history of windsurfing and the most prestigious winter sailing event in the world. It is held since 1980 each year alternating between Europe and North America.

ISSWC 2009 was held in Riga, Latvia, just one the shore of lake Kisezers, gathering record big participant number – there were 111 competitors from 14 countries. Also more riders in youth division and women group were represented in ISSWC 2009. For sport development new discipline – Short-track Slalom on ice field was introduced for the first time in the history of WISSA World Championships. High speeds with sharp turns just in front of the eyes of spectators!

Even if some days wind could have been stronger, each day some races were done, so riders could collect points. After last sunny championship day, where only slalom race was happening, but spectators were having fun riding after ATV with snowboards or skis, official Closing ceremony was organized in the Radio Bar in Riga Old Town. There have been five World Champion Cups, 15 medal sets and more than 30 special nominations presented in the awards ceremony of ISSWC 2009.

Outstanding performance has shown Alexander Larrson from Sweden, winning all disciplines in wings class, getting 2 World Champion Cups. Russian riders stayed unbeatable in kite class nearly in all divisions. However tough competition was going on between Russian riders, provoking each other to break rules on the track, giving protests and discussing much. Finally Maxim Shaidakov got the World Champion Cup in kite class course discipline overall.

In the classical sailboard course and marathon discipline young riders from Poland showed technical and fast performance, but in sailboards slalom discipline surfers from Latvia demonstrated what it is all about! , Jarek Miarczynski from Poland got the World Champion title in course racing discipline, but Janis Preiss from Latvia – sailboard class slalom discipline. Janis Preiss is also coming closer to another title this winter season – European Cup Champion title, as after 3 rounds of Winter Windsurf European Cup (WWEC 2009), he is leader in slalom and also course discipline.

Special awards from WISSA (World Ice and Snow Sailing Association) were presented to Ronald Verhaegen from Belgium for Best design, but Witold Neslung, Coach of Polish Sailboard team got Hendricksson award for sportsmanship.

Next Ice and Snow Sailing World Championship 2010, celebrating 30th anniversary, will be held in Quebec, Canada, hopefully gathering even more sailors from all over the world.
